Privacy Policy

1. Introduction

Shake On ("Shake On," "we," "us," or "our") is a Parkinson's disease research fundraising initiative. Donations raised through Shake On are directed to The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research.

This Privacy Policy describes how we collect, use, share, and protect personal information when you visit shakeon.org (the "Site"), make a donation or pledge, sign up to receive communications, or otherwise interact with us. By using the Site or providing your information to us, you agree to the practices described in this policy.

If you do not agree with the terms of this policy, please do not use the Site or provide us with your information.

2. Information We Collect

We collect information in the following ways.

Information you provide directly

When you make a pledge, contact us, sign up for communications, or otherwise interact with Shake On, you may provide us with:

  • Your name, including your first name as you wish it to appear in dedication messages
  • Your email address
  • Your phone number, when you opt in to receive text message notifications
  • Your pledge details, including the type of pledge (per goal, per assist, per block, per win) and pledge amount
  • Dedication messages you choose to share, including the name or memory you are dedicating your pledge or donation to
  • Other information you choose to share with us, such as in correspondence or sponsor inquiries

Information collected automatically

When you visit the Site, we may automatically collect certain technical information, including:

  • Your IP address, browser type, device type, and operating system
  • Pages visited, time spent on pages, and referring URLs
  • Geographic location at the country or region level

This information is collected through standard web analytics tools and is used to understand how visitors use the Site and to improve our communications.

Information from third parties

We may receive information about you from third parties, including:

  • GoFundMe, when you make a donation through our fundraising page hosted on their platform. The information we receive is limited to what GoFundMe provides to fundraiser organizers and is governed by GoFundMe's own privacy policy.
  • Shopify, when you purchase merchandise through our online store. We receive order details necessary to fulfill your purchase.
  • Service providers and partners, such as the New York Sirens or The Michael J. Fox Foundation, in connection with collaborative events or programs.

3. How We Use Your Information

We use the information we collect for the following purposes:

  • To process and acknowledge pledges, donations, and merchandise orders
  • To track pledge fulfillment based on game outcomes and player statistics during the PWHL season
  • To display dedication messages on the Site, with your permission
  • To send you communications related to your pledge, donation, or merchandise order
  • To send you stewardship communications, such as monthly impact updates, end-of-season summaries, and tax acknowledgment letters when applicable
  • To send operational notifications and updates via email or text message, when you have opted in to receive them
  • To respond to inquiries, partnership requests, or other correspondence
  • To improve the Site, our communications, and our programs
  • To comply with legal obligations, including those related to charitable fundraising, tax reporting, and applicable consumer protection laws

4. How We Share Your Information

We share your information only as described below. We do not sell your personal information.

With service providers

We share information with third parties who help us operate Shake On, including:

  • Email service providers, who deliver our communications to you
  • Web and analytics providers, who host the Site and help us understand its performance
  • Workflow and automation providers, who help us manage operational tasks such as pledge tracking, donation processing, and stewardship communications
  • Text message providers, who deliver SMS notifications to recipients who have opted in
  • Payment processors and donation platforms, who handle financial transactions

These service providers are authorized to use your information only to perform services on our behalf and are required to protect your information.

With charitable beneficiaries

Donations made through Shake On are directed to The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research. We may share aggregated or de-identified information about donations with The Michael J. Fox Foundation for reporting and stewardship purposes. Personally identifiable donor information is shared with The Michael J. Fox Foundation only with the donor's knowledge through the donation platform's standard processes.

With partners and collaborators

We may share aggregated or de-identified information about pledges and donations with partners such as the New York Sirens, the PWHL, or sponsoring organizations, in connection with collaborative events or recognition programs. We do not share personally identifiable information with these partners except where you have provided it directly to them or have given us specific consent to do so.

For legal reasons

We may disclose your information if we believe in good faith that doing so is required by law, legal process, or governmental request, or is necessary to protect the rights, property, or safety of Shake On, our supporters, or others.

In the event of a transition

If Shake On is involved in a merger, acquisition, dissolution, or transfer of assets, your information may be transferred as part of that transition. We will notify you before any such transfer occurs and provide an opportunity to object where applicable.

5. Text Message (SMS) Communications

This section describes our use of text message (SMS) communications. Please read it carefully if you are considering opting in to receive SMS from Shake On.

How you opt in

You will only receive SMS messages from Shake On if you have explicitly opted in to receive them. We collect SMS opt-in consent through written confirmation, email confirmation, or through a clearly labeled opt-in checkbox on a form. We do not send unsolicited SMS messages, and we do not purchase phone number lists from third parties for SMS outreach.

Types of messages you may receive

Once opted in, you may receive the following types of SMS messages from Shake On:

  • Operational notifications, such as pledge confirmations, donation acknowledgments, and updates about pledge fulfillment
  • Game-related updates, such as season tracker totals and pledge milestones
  • Time-sensitive alerts related to fundraising events or campaigns
  • Stewardship communications, such as thank-you messages or impact updates

Our SMS communications are not used for marketing or promotional content unrelated to Shake On's charitable purpose.

Frequency

Message frequency varies based on activity. During the PWHL season, you may receive several messages per week. During the offseason, message frequency is significantly lower, typically a few messages per month or less.

Costs

Message and data rates may apply. Standard messaging rates from your wireless carrier apply to all SMS messages sent and received. Shake On does not charge you for SMS messages, but your carrier may. Please check with your wireless carrier for details about your messaging plan.

How to opt out

You can opt out of SMS communications at any time by replying STOP to any message you receive from us. After you reply STOP, you will receive a confirmation message and will not receive further SMS communications from Shake On unless you opt in again.

Phone number sharing

We do not share, sell, or rent your phone number with third parties for marketing or promotional purposes. Your phone number is shared only with our text message service provider (Twilio) for the purpose of delivering messages to you, and only with other service providers as necessary to operate the SMS program. Phone numbers are stored securely and accessed only by authorized personnel.

Consent is not a condition

Your consent to receive SMS messages is not a condition of any purchase, donation, or pledge. You may participate in any Shake On program without opting in to SMS.

Sender information

SMS messages from Shake On are sent from [PHONE NUMBER]. Always verify the sender before responding with personal information.

6. Cookies and Analytics

The Site uses cookies and similar technologies to provide functionality, analyze usage, and improve your experience. Cookies are small text files placed on your device that allow us to recognize your browser and store preferences.

We use cookies for the following purposes:

  • Functional cookies, which are necessary for the Site to operate properly
  • Analytics cookies, which help us understand how visitors use the Site and which pages are most useful

You can control cookies through your browser settings. Most browsers allow you to refuse cookies or delete existing cookies. Please note that some Site features may not function properly if cookies are disabled.

7. Children's Privacy

The Site is not directed to children under the age of 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If we learn that we have inadvertently collected personal information from a child under 13, we will delete that information promptly. 8. Data Security

We take reasonable measures to protect your information from unauthorized access, use, disclosure, alteration, or destruction. These measures include administrative, technical, and physical safeguards appropriate to the sensitivity of the information we collect.

However, no method of transmission over the internet or method of electronic storage is completely secure. We cannot guarantee absolute security, but we work to protect your information using industry-standard practices.

If we become aware of a security incident affecting your personal information, we will notify you in accordance with applicable law.

9. Your Rights and Choices

You have certain rights and choices regarding your personal information.

Access, correction, and deletion

  • Request access to the personal information we hold about you
  • Request correction of inaccurate or incomplete information
  • Request deletion of your personal information, subject to certain legal retention requirements
  • Request that we stop using your information for specific purposes, such as stewardship communications

Communication preferences

You may opt out of email communications at any time by clicking the unsubscribe link in any email or by emailing hello@shakeon.org. You may opt out of SMS communications by following the instructions in Section 5.

Please note that you cannot opt out of communications strictly necessary to complete a transaction you initiated, such as a donation receipt.

California residents

If you are a California resident, you may have additional rights under the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA), including the right to know what personal information we have collected about you, the right to request deletion of your personal information, and the right not to be discriminated against for exercising your rights. 10. Third-Party Services

The Site may contain links to third-party websites, services, or content. We are not responsible for the privacy practices of these third parties. Please review the privacy policies of any third-party services before providing them with your information.

Shake On uses the following third-party services to operate. Each maintains its own privacy policy:

  • GoFundMe, for donation processing
  • Shopify, for merchandise sales
  • Google, for email, document, and analytics services
  • Netlify, for website hosting
  • Twilio, for SMS message delivery
  • Make.com and Anthropic, for workflow automation and content drafting
  • The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research, as the charitable beneficiary of donations

11. International Users

Shake On is based in the United States. If you access the Site or provide us with information from outside the United States, your information will be transferred to and processed in the United States. By using the Site, you consent to this transfer.

12. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we make material changes, we will update the "Last updated" date at the top of this policy and, where appropriate, notify you by email or through a notice on the Site.

Your continued use of the Site or our services after the effective date of any updated policy constitutes acceptance of the updated terms. We encourage you to review this policy periodically.
